UPVC
While not the classic choice for French doors, UPVC is probably the cheapest option and, as almost certainly double-glazed, will provide adequate insulation for your home, and give you a good 15 to 20 years before you have to replace them. The downside is that they don’t look particularly traditional, and the frames are a little more chunky than other materials. You can get a UPVC French door in colours other than white, but choice is limited. They may yellow or warp over time and then will need to be replaced as repairs are almost impossible.
Aluminium
French doors made from aluminium are more traditional than UPVC and you can get the more authentic look with a thin frame and glazing bars. Aluminium is strong and naturally rust-free, so you’ll get a pair of French doors that will last. You can even get them finished in any colour you like, so you’ll be able to get them to match with the rest of the windows and doors in your home.
Wood
It’s likely that your original French doors are made of wood, so you’re replacing like for like. However, today’s wood French doors are much more advanced than those installed decades ago. For example, today’s exterior wood French doors are made of well engineered softwood or hardwood and finished with a hardwearing paint coating that give excellent weather resistance. They are naturally insulating, come with a range of glass options, and can be modified to fit your home perfectly, even at the time of fitting. And, of course, they can be painted in any colour.
Which french doors material is right for me?
Many of us are looking for a French door that looks right aesthetically, offer good thermal and sound insulation, and will last for decades – all within budget. And, unless the rest of your windows are UPVC or you live in a modern home with a strong contemporary style, your best bet are probably wood French doors. They look classic, are less clunky than UPVC, can be painted to match the exterior (and interior) of your home, and can be modified on site to ensure a perfect fit.
