Cottage Window Replacement, Ripon, Yorkshire
Grant first contacted us in the summer of 2025 regarding his guest cottage, located in a beautiful rural setting on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Having recently moved to the property, he was concerned about the condition of the existing windows. They were badly rotted in several areas and performing poorly. During our initial site visit, we established that the windows were not original to the cottage but relatively modern lipped double glazed casements likely no more than 15 years old. Unfortunately, a combination of modest initial quality and lack of ongoing maintenance had left them in a very poor state, requiring full replacement.
After discussing the character of the building and its surroundings, we recommended a return to a more authentic flush casement design. This style would have been far closer to the cottage’s original appearance and significantly more sympathetic to the architecture than the later lipped casements.
Grant selected Farrow & Ball “French Gray” for the external finish, paired with a off white internal finish. The look was completed with black monkey tail handles and stays, creating a timeless, classical cottage aesthetic that perfectly suits the setting.
Beyond the visual transformation, Grant was particularly impressed with the engineering behind the new windows:
- High security espagnolette locking system
- Engineered timber construction to minimise movement, warping, and swelling
- Modern high performance double glazed units
- Traditional detailing combined with contemporary performance standards
The result is a cottage that not only looks historically appropriate but now performs to modern expectations in terms of insulation, security, and longevity.
Grant was genuinely amazed at the difference quality windows can make, both visually and functionally and has since expressed his intention to return to us to replace the windows and doors in the main house in the near future.
