Traditional Cottage Timber Windows and Door Replacement, Buckinghamshire

Nestled in the beautiful Chiltern Hills and overlooking a village common, this charming traditional flint cottage recently received a carefully considered upgrade with new windows and a side door from Woodcraft Windows.

Andy first contacted us after noticing the excellent results we achieved for his neighbours. Seeing the quality of their installation gave him the confidence to approach Woodcraft Windows to replace the cottage’s old, draughty windows and tired side door.

The brief was clear: maintain the traditional character of the cottage while improving comfort, security, and performance.

For this project, Andy chose classic cottage-style windows with a flying mullion, ensuring the new windows stayed true to the original architectural style. One of the standout features is a beautiful arched casement window, which adds a distinctive character to the home.

During our survey, our team identified that some of the brickwork required repointing before installation. Once the masonry work was completed, we proceeded with the replacement of six windows and a side door.

The original side door had become draughty over time and had lost its colour and charm. Andy opted for a new door that balances traditional design with modern security and durability.

For the finish, he selected Farrow & Ball “French Gray”, applied with a brush-painted finish to retain an authentic heritage look. The door was completed with a classic cottage-style black handle, perfectly complementing the cottage aesthetic.

For the windows, Andy chose a clean white painted finish paired with traditional pear-drop handles and stays, creating a timeless, elegant look that sits beautifully within the Chiltern landscape.

Beyond the visual transformation, Andy was particularly impressed by the performance and craftsmanship of the new windows and doors, which include:

• High-security locking system
• European engineered Redwood construction to minimise movement, warping, and swelling
• Modern high-performance double-glazed units
• Traditional detailing combined with contemporary performance standards

The result is a cottage that not only looks true to its heritage, but now benefits from modern levels of insulation, security, and durability — ensuring it remains comfortable and beautiful for many years to come.

“We got in contact with Woodcraft Windows because our neighbours had used them for all their windows on their similar Victorian cottage, and it had looked amazing with a traditional old cottage style look. From the initial visit from Philip to the survey with Vadim and finally the installation team themselves, there was a high degree of professionalism. The installation team were top class, fitting all the windows and the rear door to the highest standard possible and leaving everything spotless. The cottage looks amazing now, with draughty windows and doors a thing of the past. I would highly recommend Woodcraft Windows especially if you have an old traditional cottage like ours which needs extra attention and care when this type of work is required.”
